I don't think peculiar is the word... it's downright strange and creepy. Which is kind of fun to look at, the man clearly had talent. The detail is amazing.

It's very old, around 1500 I think. He was also Italian, so combining those two facts you can see the colours are very similar to what was around at the time.
The idea with the fruits/books though? I have no idea how he thought of that!

I suppose it really could be, a few artists claimed absinthe as a muse. I wonder of wiki or some other biography speaks on what inspired him.
